I regularly visit the Brioche Cafe whenever I go to Totnes as the food there is lovely, I always  have a breakfast everything is cooked to perfection and is always hot and very tasty.  They do a special loose earl grey tea there with cinnamon in it I would definitely recommend trying that its lovely.

Totnes is a lovely place to visit very much like a small Glastonbury.  I would absolutely recommend the Brioche Cafe when visiting, it is situated at the top of the town on the right hand side.

Totnes – a small market town just 15 minutes from Torquay is well worth visiting if you are a visitor to Torbay. Friday is market day and the best day to visit.

It’s position above the River Dart is a beautiful location with many attractions for the visitor - museums, a riverside with steamer quay, an ancient Guildhall and Church, a Norman Castle and the North and East Gates.

As a visitor to this fascinating town, the first impression is that it it like a mini Glastonbury. You can uncover the legend of the Brutus stone; browse amongst the delightful and unusual shops for arts, crafts and unusual gifts or just listen to buskers, especially on market days. The riverside offers you the chance to take a boat trip from the Steamer Quay to the historic town of Dartmouth or the steam train to Buckfastleigh where you can visit the Abbey.

Starting at the bottom of the town by the river:

Looking down the river – in the distance you can see the excellent Steam Packet Inn. A lovely riverside bar and restaurant where on a sunny day you can dine outside on the edge of the river. From the quay, walk up Fore Street  into the centre of the town, passing underneath the East Gate Arch – a lovely Tudor structure. On its way up into the town the street winds it way past many examples of 16th and 17th century merchant’s houses, including the restored Elizabethan House, which is now Totnes museum.

St. Mary’s Church in Totnes has a fine example of a fifteenth century building  from red sandstone  quarried in Beer.

Rising to the top of the town you will find the market square. There are many cafes around offering good food, coffee and free WiFi. The Tangerine Tree Cafe is one of my favourites. For a fantastic breakfast visit the Brioche.

The shops in Totnes are unusual with a unique character, with very few of the national chain stores/eateries. (No mcdonalds, kentuckies, costas, neros etc. here ) There are many wholefood healthy and vegetarian options available (Seeds2, The Willow etc.). Totnes even has its own legal currency – The Totnes Pound – accepted by most shops and businesses.

Totnes is a special day out.

A new bistro has opened in Totnes by the owners of The Waterside Bistro which has been open for seven years. The new bistro is called the New Walk Brasserie and is less than 50 yards from the other bistro.

The New Walk Brasserie is on the corner of Dartmouth Square, it will have a different atmosphere but offer similar menus with a coffe shop and bar.

Good luck to them.

Breakfasts at The Brioche is excellent. I usually have the full meat breakfast with an extra of black pudding.

The breakfast includes egg, 2 bacon, sausage, beans, tomato and mushrooms with toast and butter. All cooked very nicely and washed down with a couple of cups of tea.

If you are in Totnes and looking for somewhere to eat then you cannot get better than The Brioche.

Fridays is a good day to visit Totnes when the weekly market is on on the square. You must visit The Common Loaf Bakery stall for some of the best quality bread available.

Also the Seeds2 Bakery and Heath store is worth visiting (Try a piece of the Stilton, Leak and Walnut Quiche – Fantastic!)

For my birthday treat to day I visited the Oasis Float Centre at the Arcturus Centre in Totnes

It is not the first float I have and can highly reccommend it. Floating reduces levels of stress-related bio-chemicals such as adrenalin and cortisol, and stimulates the production of endorphins (ie): the body’s natural opiates and painkillers. Floating also helps releave aches and pains in our joints and muscles – including headaches, neck and back pain, and even arthritis and rheumatism.

Whatever it does it leaves you feeling wonderfully relaxed afterwards – I can highly recommend a visit to Totnes to any visitors staying in the Torbay area.
