Last night saw around 80 fire-fighters putting their lives at risk to put out a fire at this derelict hotel in Torquay’s Warren Road. This should never of happened – why was this eyesore not demolished years ago?
It is obvious this would happen sooner or later:
Almost a year ago to the day of the derelict Palm Court Hotel Fire
Three years ago the same again at the Dorchester Hotel Torquay
This seems to happen all to often at boarded up empty hotels – another example I know of recently Royal Pier Hotel Weston Super Mare - It took 2 fires here though before it was demolished!
Is it a cheaper way for the owners of these premises to get them demolished? or, is it just that they cannot get permission to demolish them and this is another way of getting it done? – The owners should be made to foot the bill for the massive fire brigade operation not the tax payer.
Now that Torquay Police station closes after dark, police had also to come in from other areas so it seems – I saw several Police cars and vans hurtling along the Newton Road around 10.30pm over an hour after most of the fire crews were at the scene. Presumably coming from Newton Abbot or Exeter.
Fire appliances were sent from Ilfracombe, Barnstaple, Combe Martin, Lynton and Woolacombe, including a second aerial ladder platform from Barnstaple. What a waste of resources on something that would not have happened if it had been demolished. Not to mention how much this has cost the tax payer. And great worry and inconvenience to people that had to be evacuated from their home close by.
Also how much risk would this have put other people at, if another serious fire had happened somewhere else? The fire service would have been very seriously stretched.
If any buildings are left empty and are obviously not going to be used again (Other than by squatters and low lives) then they should be pulled down
